Tonight's Smackdown kicks off with the opening pyro as Josh Matthews and Matt Striker welcome us inside the Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
In the ring, Theodore Long is standing with a contract for Alberto Del Rio versus Sheamus at Extreme Rules and informs us of tonight's proceedings. Teddy says following The Amazing Red's attack on Petey Williams last week, he received clearance from RAW Co-GM Jim Cornette to make the one-on-one match tonight.
Long also says there will be a triple threat match tonight featuring participants in Sunday's Tag Team Turmoil Match and a series of BEAT THE CLOCK matches to determine the final entrant into the Elimination Chamber Match at Extreme Rules. In an added twist, however, the superstar with the LONGEST match will enter FIRST.
Teddy invites both Sheamus and Del Rio to the ring. Both oblige, and Sheamus hits the ring first. Del Rio and Ricardo Rodriguez follow suit. Long informs them that he's selected the stipulation for Sunday and all he needs is their signatures to make it official. Long informs them both that they will compete in a FIRST BLOOD MATCH. Del Rio explodes at this announcement. He grabs a mic and rants at Teddy, telling him that it's unfair to put him in a match with Sheamus, let alone one so violent.
Sheamus grabs the mic away, signs the contract and informs Alberto that he has one of two options; get his arse kicked right here tonight or have it done on Sunday. Del Rio reluctantly concedes and signs the contract. Del Rio storms from the ring, INCENSED with this decision.
We go backstage and John Cena is headed to the ring for his Beat The Clock Match as we head to break.
Back from commercial and we get a video recap of John Cena qualifying in impressive fashion against Sting two weeks ago.
John Cena heads to the ring and awaits his opponent--"Hurricane" John Walters. Walters hits the ring and the match gets going.
JOHN CENA def. "HURRICANE" JOHN WALTERS in 7:25
A solid opening contest that saw both men using an effective ground game. Walters would lock in a Sharpshooter, while Cena later cinched in the STFU, but both men refused to quit. Finish comes as Cena counters out of Walters' Straightjacket Lung Blower with an FU and picks up the victory, establishing the time to beat.
Cameras pan backstage as Brodie Lee lumbers backstage. The Big Rig preps for his Beat The Clock match next as we go to commercial.
Back from break as we get a video package of Brodie knocking off Sheamus (with help from Del Rio and Ricardo) to qualify for the Chamber. Back in the ring as Brodie Lee makes his way to the ring for his Beat The Clock Match. To Brodie's surprise, Teddy has set up a titanic clash as the Human Blueprint Matt Morgan rips down the entranceway and jumps into the ring to get this match under way.
BRODIE LEE def. MATT MORGAN in 6:55
Another hard-hitting physical war. Morgan tried out-powering Brodie with a Body Avalanche and a Chokeslam. Morgan stunned Brodie with a Carbon Footprint and picked up a 2 1/2 count. Morgan's flurry sent Brodie flying into one of his signature rages, as The Big Rig answered back with an impressive Superkick and a Truck Stop Spinning Side Slam, but Morgan still had some reserve in the tank.
Finish came as Morgan tried to follow up with a second Carbon Footprint, only to have Brodie duck, rebound and knock Matt senseless with a Big Rig Boot for an academic three count with thirty seconds remaining, setting up a new time to beat.
We go backstage and a clearly impressed Sheamus is applauding Brodie's effort, only to have Del Rio jump The Great White from behind and start laying into the Celtic Warrior with a steel chair. Del Rio strikes Sheamus repeatedly about the back and neck as Ricardo shouts epithets at the former World Champion. Officials have to rush in to separate Del Rio from the fallen Irishman. Staff doctors examine Sheamus as we head to commercial.
Back from break and we get a video package for Tag Team Turmoil on Sunday. We go to the parking lot where Del Rio and Ricardo attempt to flee the arena for the evening. As Del Rio goes to pile into the back seat, Sheamus emerges, swinging wildly with a lead pipe, narrowly missing Del Rio. Alberto escapes but Ricardo gets caught by the collar of his jacket. Sheamus slams Ricardo's head through the driver and and back seat windows before throwing the unconscious stool pigeon in the trunk of Del Rio's White 1970 Ford Thunderbird, valued at over $150,000. Sheamus produces a baseball bat and a can of green spray paint from the trunk.
Sheamus put his fair share of dents in the car, broke off both side view mirrors, busted out the remaining windows, and spray-painted "FELLA" on the side and "DEL RIO=ARSE" on the trunk, before stepping to the driver's seat and peeling out of the arena, Ricardo still held hostage.
Back in the ring as Justin Roberts introduces the Triple Threat Match featuring Sunday's Tag Team Turmoil Participants. Gunshots ring throughout the arena as MCMG hits the ring, Chris Sabin dressed for action. Beer Money hits the ring next and Bobby Roode dressed in his top-of-the-line streets indicates that James Storm will step to the plate tonight. Finally, The Kings of Wrestling head out, with Claudio Castagnoli throwing the punches tonight. The bell rings and here we go.
CLAUDIO CASTAGNOLI def. CHRIS SABIN and JAMES STORM
A very exciting Triple Threat Match and preview for Sunday night. Claudio dropped Storm and Sabin with Bicycle Kicks, but could only pick up two on each. Sabin utilized the air game to perfection, but Storm would cut him off with Closing Time. Finish came as Sabin tried to set up for Cradle Shock on Claudio, only to have Storm chime in with a Last Call. Storm starts trash-talking Sabin, only to turn directly into the path of Swiss Death. Claudio polishes Storm off with a Ricola Bomb for the three count.
After the match, the Kings celebrate, and Roode and Shelley jump the apron to exact revenge. Roode walks into a Double Big Boot. Shelley mounts the top rope for a Diving Cross Body but gets caught and dropped with KRS ONE. The Kings turn their attention back to Roode and drill him with a devastating KRS TWO. The Kings reign supreme over the carnage before heading to the back.
Backstage as Edge is gearing up for Beat The Clock next!
Back with the WWE Rewind, and it's Edge spearing Kurt Angle to qualify for the Chamber last week.
The Rated R Superstar flies to the ring as Matt Striker reminds us that Brodie Lee still owns the time to beat at 6:55. Edge waits patiently as the lights go down and STING gets lowered from the rafters for what is sure to be another classic. The bell rings and the match gets under way.
EDGE def. STING in 6:35
Great back and forth, albeit quick. Sting answered early with a Stinger Splash, but Edge came back with an Edge-O-Matic after escaping a Military Press. Finish came as Sting telegraphed another Stinger Splash, but Edge's reflexes proved a tad quicker. The Rated R Superstar somersaulted to the opposite corner and came back with a rib-shattering Spear to pick up the three and the new time to beat.
Backstage and Nigel McGuinness is looking to qualify next. We go to commercial.
Back from break as Nigel McGuinness is in the ring awaiting his opponent. The graphic featuring Edge and the time of 6:35 flashes on the titantron and Nigel has identified his goal. Nigel gets a bit of a surprise as the Moscow Mauler, Vladimir Kozlov marches to ringside. The scowling Sambo champion hits the ring and Nigel tries to cut him off at the pass as the bell rings.
NIGEL McGUINNESS def. VLADIMIR KOZLOV in 5:25
A very hard-hitting, quick-paced match as both combatants realized the urgency. Kozlov launched an assault that included the Battering Ram and a Front Kick for two. Nigel regained his wits and assumed full control of the contest from the first pinfall attempt. Finish came as Kozlov tried to regain control with an Arm Trap Headbutt, only to have McGuinness answer back with a Jawbreaker Lariat and seal Kozlov's fate with a London Dungeon submission for the victory with 1:10 remaining. Nigel has set the bar VERY high for the remaining participants.
Cameras move backstage and catch Samoa Joe gearing up for action. His Beat The Clock Match is up next as we go back to break.
Back from commercial and Joe is moving methodically to the ring as the video package runs showing The Samoan Submission Machine’s win over Del Rio three weeks ago. Joe waits for his opponent and it’s “The Masterpiece” Chris Masters. Master looks in fantastic shape as he hits the ring for another battle.
SAMOA JOE def. CHRIS MASTERS in 6:00 (Fails to Beat The Clock)
Masters raised more than a few eyebrows early, using the power-game to stun his much larger opponent, but Joe would recover. Finish came as Masters attempted to lock in the Master Lock, but Joe fell back into the corner, crushing Masters and setting him up perfectly for a CCS Enziguri. As Joe connected however, the time expired. Determined not to enter the Chamber FIRST, Joe finished the job with a Muscle Buster and picked up the three at 6:00.
We go back to Teddy’s office and Red thanks him for the match tonight. Red explains that Petey Williams has been handed everything in his career and wants to make him earn something for once. Teddy tells Red that he admires the fiery spirit and tells Red to get ready because the match is next as we head back to break.
Back from break as Petey Williams heads to the ring, still fuming from last week. Red heads to the ring next, but doesn’t make it all the way as Petey gets the match off to a flying start with a Suicide Plancha into a Headscissor Takedown. The bell rings and they’re off.
PETEY WILLIAMS def. AMAZING RED
For a solid fifteen minutes, this was match of the night. Nearfalls and High Spots abound. Petey got the jump on Red with a Hurricanrana into the corner, followed by the Tree of Woe and the O Canada Nut Squash.
Red would get back into it with a Red Spike, picking up a VERY close nearfall. Finish came as Red attempted a Standing Red Star Press and Petey escaped at the last possible second. As Red tries to pump some air back into his lungs, Petey rebounds with a DEVASTATING Running Canadian Destroyer to pick up the win. After the match, Red offered a handshake and both men received a standing ovation from the crowd upon leaving the ring.
Backstage with Bryan Danielson prepping for the main event. Nigel McGuinness still has the time to beat as we go to our final commercial break.
Back in the arena as Danielson comes down to the ring, serenaded by the fans on “The Final Countdown”. As the Dragon waits in the ring, Striker and Matthews recap tonight’s action and the time to beat. JERRY LYNN hits the entrance ramp and it appears the final Beat The Clock Contest of the night has been set.
BRYAN DANIELSON def. JERRY LYNN in 5:27
A very entertaining match. Things very quickly evolved into a suplex contest. At one juncture, Danielson was beating down Lynn in the corner and upon being admonished by the official, Danielson roared “I HAVE UNTIL FIVE!” which drew a MASSIVE POP from the Indy crowd.
Finish came with Lynn setting up for the Cradle Piledriver but Danielson countered out drilled his opponent with a Roundhouse Kick to the gut that doubled Lynn over. This created an opening for Danielson to lock on Cattle Mutilation and pick up the victory, but the buzzer sounded just TWO SECONDS before Lynn would tap out. An exhausted and now infuriated Danielson took his frustrations out on Lynn after the match, jumping the already downed ECW Original and subjecting him to the YES! Lock.
Danielson refused to let go, prompting officials, EMTs and just about every other member of backstage personnel to try and separate Danielson from the victimized Lynn. Teddy Long comes out to try and restore order, but this situation has fallen into complete chaos. Nigel McGuinness will be entering the Chamber last on Sunday night, and...
A camera crew has been doggedly following Sheamus since he took off with Ricardo in the trunk. Sheamus has taken the beat-up Thunderbird out to the outskirts of Muskegon, down to Lake Michigan. The Celtic Warrior drags Ricardo from the trunk, beats him about the face with the lead pipe, drawing even more blood than already existed. Sheamus grabs Rodriguez by the scruff of his collar and tosses him into the lake. Thankfully, Coast Guard is there to make the recovery.
What follows is nothing short of stunning. Sheamus reaches into the trunk and pulls out a brick. The Great White then moves to the drivers’ side door, places the brick on the accelerator, turns on the ignition and watches stoically as the 1970 Ford Thunderbird that cost a small fortune at the beginning of the evening, rolls slowly off the pier and into the drink. Sheamus glares menacingly at the camera and tells Del Rio that after he’s through with him at Extreme Rules, they’ll be throwing him off the pier as well. Sheamus drops the lead pipe and wanders off as Smackdown heads off the air.
